RMA was engaged to advise on the redesign of the access road to this site to optimise the design and reduce construction costs. The key issue was that access to gravel that complies with TMR specification (Type 2 unbound granular material) was limited and required haulage from a quarry in the order of 200km away.
The cost of transporting gravel over this distance would have been prohibitive, so RMA engineers investigated the option to use lower grade (Type 4) material that was readily available in a nearby quarry.
Our soils and road design specialists were able to optimise the pavement design to utilise the local materials, and also specified a process to properly lay and compact the material to meet the appropriate road building standards.
