The realignment of Jondaryan Muldu Road North is a significant infrastructure project that enhances regional transport connectivity west of Toowoomba. It supports the ongoing expansion of a major mining operation, strengthening the road network to accommodate future growth and meet operational demands. This project involved the detailed design and construction management of approximately 9 kilometres of new roadway. RMA provided integrated civil, traffic and surface water engineering services, delivering a solution that met Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) requirements as well as the specific operational needs of the client.
Prior to RMA’s involvement, the project had stalled during the approvals phase, creating uncertainty around programme delivery and project timelines. Drawing on our strong working relationship with TRC and our understanding of local approval processes, RMA worked collaboratively with all stakeholders to re-establish project momentum, navigate regulatory requirements and secure the necessary approvals.
A key design challenge was developing a pavement solution capable of accommodating oversized 54-metre road trains while minimising earthworks and reducing reliance on imported construction materials. RMA delivered a design incorporating approximately 99,000 m³ of earthworks and more than 100,000 m³ of pavement construction, carefully balancing long-term performance, constructability and cost efficiency. Through close collaboration with New Hope, the design was optimised to utilise overburden basalt sourced from the adjacent mine. This significantly reduced imported material requirements, saving the client approximately $3 million.
Stormwater management was another critical component of the design. RMA undertook detailed TUFLOW flood modelling across a combined catchment area of approximately 1,400 hectares to assess hydrological impacts and inform drainage design. The final solution incorporated eighteen culverts strategically sized and positioned to maintain existing flow paths, minimise flooding impacts and improve the long-term resilience of the road network.
The successful delivery of Jondaryan Muldu Road North has further strengthened RMA’s involvement in the region. Building on this success, RMA has been engaged to undertake the detailed design of the southern section of Jondaryan Muldu Road, Jondaryan Sabine Road and the Stage 2 realignment of the Acland Coal Mine entrance, continuing to support critical infrastructure improvements for the region’s future growth.
